In early 2006, two aging BACmen began to explore the question -- Is it possible to create a chapter quartet -- with four guys who live hundreds of miles apart -- and therefore only see each other on BACnight -- and who don't have time to learn any music? Hmmm -- clearly age has done more to these guys then simply turn their hair gray.
But wait -- What if this collection of odd oldies -- created a Limited Purpose Senior Quartet? That is -- a quartet that only sang BACsongs -- and which relied upon BACtracks and BACnights to learn the routines -- and then - used their few minutes of preBAC and BACbreaks to rehearse like dose real quartet guys. After all -- couldn't simply singing with a chorus as wonderful as the Big Apple give four geezerBAC's all they'd need to perform competitively?? Hmmm -- startin' to sound possible to you too huh??
Speaking of too -- now all they had to do was find two other unsuspecting, gullible BAColdies -- who'd buy into this LPSQ experiment. But wait -- what is their "Purpose" -- you know -- the goal of this LPSQ? What does "to perform competitively" mean to these guys? Well - now there's the rub; they want to perform competitively in the Barbershop Harmony Societies Annual International competition for geezers -- and to do that they'll have to enter some qualifying contests and place in the top 25 in North America. Whoops -- OK -- now you know that this no plan BACduo ain't the sharpest pencils in da BACbox.
The original LPSQ had Dick Prestholdt singing lead with Steve Dunie, Tom McQueeney and Rich Galdi filling out the tenor, bari and bass spots. To "compete" they needed a name and in true BACform they came up with "Manhattan on the Rocks". Initially some thought this might just be their favorite drink; others agreed and mused that their plan -- to do nuttin' and succeed -- was probably a product of having a few too many.
Undaunted and coached by some skeptical but talented BACbrothers -- they entered their first qualifying contest up in New England in the Fall of 2006 and by the time the rest of the world registered their scores -- this BACfour found themselves seeded --- whoops -- 39th. Hmmm -- apparently their favorite libation name was also a first contest outcome prophesy.
When their good BACbuddy Rich Galdi elected to attend to some real life responsibilities -- the remaining BACofdapac threesome -- sang a few BACtunes with BACbass Gordon Harrison one -- without ever mentioning that they were checking him out to see if he could be fooled into becoming a part of their geezerBAC fantasy.
Life is good. Gordon not only bought into their donuttin'n'succeed plan -- he came up with an idea to move the quartet more swiftly down its apparent path. He suggested that for the next several months -- if they attended the preBAC visuals rehearsals -- they could spend even less time rehearsing. So - raise your glasses high cuz it's clear that Gordon's the perfect fit for da Big Apple's -- Manhattan on the Rocks.
