We all need to feel accepted; especially performers who practice wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Being part of a large and diverse men's musical group, it's funny what kinds of things we discover affirm us and the little ways by which we acknowledge our affections.
Here, in his own words, is a snap shot from one of the Big Apple's newer members, in an early encounter with one of the Chapter's and the Barbershop Society's most respected, beloved but sometimes ornery, arranger and judge:

Pat Demilio wrote to say:
"It was directed at me.
My story goes like this: Early June, I was up on the risers for a rehearsal. Sitting ten feet from me was Rog [Payne]. Periodically I would glance over to him to see how he was doing [Roger was, at the time, already struggling with his terminal illness].
On about the 3rd or 4th glance over to him we made eye contact. Then came the totally unexpected; Rog looked at me and " stuck his tongue out".
This was the greatest gesture I could ever even hope for and my way of knowing that I was accepted (not by good words, mind you).
It's no surprise to anyone in the chorus that what transpired was vintage Rog. For this I am forever be blessed.
Every time I sing I wear the yellow bracelet. It doesn't take much to remember and pay tribute. Then again that's me."

Laugh at the little jobs, but blowing the pitch is more than tooting a little harmonica. There are hours of unflagging attention to the director and instantly identifying the key of every section of every song. It barely hints at the focus and dedication exemplified to our chorus by our featured pitch-blowing BACmen, Dick White.Full Story...
Every year, and perhaps as many as 3 times a year, a chorus goes into competition to find out how it measures against its peers. Why? Read this article from the Barbershop Harmony Society to learn about these conventions!
