The Northern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District of the Barbershop Harmony Society holds it's regional convention and division contests on May 5-6 New Brunswick, NJ at the at New Brunswick Hyatt Hotel.
The competition will include 11 choruses from NY, NJ and PA. The Big Apple Chorus will be showcased on the Saturday evening Jamboree but won't be competing because the Chorus has already qualified, by a prior competition, to move onto the International Convention and Competition this summer in Indianapolis.
The two-round quartet competition will include 16 quartets from all across the division. Members of the Manhattan Chapter will be seen in 6 of the 16 quartets. Three quartets will include BACmen: Paul Santino, Bob Kelly, Dr. Steve Peterson and Maurice Debar.
Three quartets will fully represent the Big Apple Chorus on all four parts; they are: Greenwich Av. (now with Cecil Brown and Mark Paul), Manhattan Music Company and the BAC's newest quartet, in their division debut, Murphy's Law. International qualifier quartet and members of the Big Apple Chorus's music team, Reveille, will be an honorary feature on the Saturday evening Jamboree too.
The Manhattan Chapter is always pleased to be in such good company. We will be there to cheer on and support all the members of the Mid Atlantic Northern Division.
Guests and first time visitors to the Manhattan Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society don't usually know just how deep and wide the iceberg below the surface is that anchors it's shining top, The Big Apple Chorus. In fact, the Big Apple Chorus is a small part of an amazing, expansive and tremendously supportive organization filled with talent, tools, resources and opportunities for the avocational male singer of every age. It's a little hard to get your arms around just how vast (yes, vast) the opportunities are in just a few casual, Monday night visits.
Harmony College East might give you an idea of what is in store and accessible to the members of The Big Apple Chorus, the 800 other chapters and 30,000 men in B.H.S.
On June 15-18 at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD several hundred members of B.H.S. chapters, like Manhattan's, will come from about a 200-mile radius to participate in Harmony College and Director's College East. Full Story...
Getting ready for an International Competition is work. Just achieving the qualifying scores to attend, as a competitor, is work. And it's not just about the work of singing well or dancing well too boot! There should be medals (at least Purple Hearts) for the logistics alone.
It's not surprising that the Manhattan Chapter and its Big Apple Chorus are going to be stepping things up soon. We're going to make sure that the nearly 9,000 people we'll be singing for in Indianapolis, in July, are entertained beyond their wildest expectations; and, as usual, their expectations for the B.A.C. are high.
The amazing thing is we're going to have a tremendous amount of fun just getting ready! That's right. Even the legion of our guys who slave to organize planes fares, hotels rooms, rehearsal rooms, uniform needs, registration applications, props and meals are all going to have a great time when we start to ramp things up Monday night as they do nearly every Monday night just getting ready.
It is a credit to our chapter's administration, our music team and especially our ever genuinely positive Director, Joe Hunter, that getting there is half the fun. In fact, when you think about it- - although we do many shows and contests, we spend more time preparing than anything else and that's what brings us back each week…and, yes, the occasional titanic cheers of 9,000 gleeful fans.
His unassuming and dependable presence in the Big Apple Chorus might be overlooked like mortar between the bricks of a wondrous building, but quietly from behind the scene and valiantly from the front row, this quintessential team player has been a pillar in the Manhattan Chapter since it's inception. There is a bittersweet irony about a shy guy who puts himself out and out front for his team as does this month's featured BACman, Gordon Harrison.Full Story...
The Atlantic Harmony Brigade is a special event for highly motivated men who actively quartet and want to build their repertory and a large network of other committed singers. Sixteen weeks prior to this invitational, weekend long event 100 selected men (25 per voice part) receive a package of 12 challenging and exciting songs (and learning CDs). They are required to independently study their part and agree only to attend the event fully prepared to sing each song accurately. They are assigned a random quartet at the start of the event and immediately compete in a fully adjudicated contest. Most of the weekend, however, is spent mixing it up in hundreds (potentially thousands) of informal but well prepared, random quartet combinations.
This year, men from all over the eastern seaboard (and a couple from as far as Fla. & Tx) will be gathering in Wilmington, Delaware, for the inauguration of an Atlantic Harmony Brigade. Two other Brigades exist; one in North Carolina (now in it's 13th year) and one in Indiana.
The weekend is capped off with a 100-man chorus and quartet show that is open to the public. It will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 7:30 PM in Wilmington DE. For a show info and a ticket order form click here. For more info write: Neal Siegal

More than ever, BACmen can be found informally quartetting in the hallways, back rooms, and stairwells of
Norman Thomas High School after rehearsal as they discover the fun of ringing chords.
Every year, and perhaps as many as 3 times a year, a chorus goes into competition to find out how it measures against its peers. Why? Read this article from the Barbershop Harmony Society to learn about these conventions!
