Could Barbershop be said to "Rock"?
by Neal Siegal

Judging by the audience reaction and the awarding of First Place and Audience Favorite to barbershop quartet 'Round Midnight at the 2006 New York Regional Harmony Sweepstakes, is it actually possible to say that Barbershop Rocks?

I like Barbershop sure enough, but I had the odds on Blue Jupiter, at least for this crowd. Hey, Blue Jupiter did Rock! They were absolutely excellent and delivered, as promised, original, vibrant, funk-based melodies and harmonies with a driving beat-box vocal percussion. They performed with conviction and a style all their own. So how did four guys singing fairly square stuff like "Tonight" from "West Side Story," "Tin Roof Blues," and "Glory of Love" not only win first place, but also take audience favorite and get one of the few standing ovations?

They sang really well (beautifully and in tune), they used the music and style to tell the song's story, they were really in the moment. They also had great rhythm and fun singing. It didn't hurt that they "owned" the version of "Take the A Train" they sang (perhaps because it was arranged by their Lead/Bari Wayne Grimmer).

So here's the point: It's not the style; it's the musicality of the performers. 'Round Midnight were certainly musical.

Yup, a Barbershop quartet rocked the house (or at least lit it up). Those of you who love to sing should surely come and check out the great musical and educational opportunities barbershop has to offer. There are hundreds of BHS, SIA and Harmony Inc. chapters around New York and the country.

Men who love to sing and want to learn to sing well, in tune, with meaning and who want to develop strong performance skills in a supportive fraternal but musical environment should visit the Barbershop Harmony Society chapters in which the guys from 'Round Midnight belong and hold musical leadership rolls. You'd be very welcomed.
