It's a New Year.
        It's BAC to work!

The performing arm of Manhattan Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, The Big Apple Chorus begins the new year (its 22nd) with an ambitious and exciting agenda for both its members and its audiences.

Chorus Director, Joe Hunter and the Chapter's music team have renewed their commitment to ambitious, quantifiable and satisfying artistic growth, beyond craft, without sacrificing any of the chapter's ample fraternity and fun.

For the Big Apple Chorus singers, the chapter has renewed its contract with the professional and proven talents of vocal coach, Ron Meixsell. Under Professor Meixsell's weekly tutelage (in small and large group sessions), the chorus will continue to train, exercise and build on the fundamentals of relaxed, well supported, in tune, well placed singing.

The Chorus' arranger, Mr. Roger Payne, is once again, hard at work on what will no doubt be, yet another piece, specially tailored to the Big Apple Chorus' high-spirited, entertainment-oriented, envelope-pushing barbershop showmanship.

The Chorus will also again have the choreographic wizardry of former Radio City Rockette, Christine Oberc. Her vision and teachings were incredibly well received last year by the members of the chorus, its audiences and the judges of the BHS competitions.

January 9: The chorus resumed its regular Monday, 7PM, rehearsals, at Norman Thomas High School (#111 East 33rd Street - between Park and Lex- 2nd Floor auditorium)

January 27-28: In addition to regular rehearsals, a special weekend retreat is scheduled for guest coaching by the highly sought after BHS luminary, Ron Black. The weekend will focus on vocal and performance craft and the unveiling of some of the BAC's new material.

March 10-11: Members of the chapter's barbershop quartets and about 25 others from our region (NY, NJ, PA, MD, PA, DE) will have their opportunity to compete to qualify for July's international competition at the Mid Atlantic District spring convention and quartet prelims to be held in Cherry Hill NJ. There they will also have the opportunity to entertain and delight us and the general public.

May 5-6: The chorus will be represented and perform and its quartets will compete in the Northern Division's contest in New Brunswick NJ. Our quartets will vie for the honor of division champion. The chorus won't, however, compete at this contest because it earned a "bye" last year, at the district level to compete this year at the international convention.

April 8: Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall will be the venue for the Big Apple Chorus annual show. The chorus will roll out an evening of wall-to-wall entertainment and harmony. Our special quartet, O.C. Times is a vibrant young group and 2005 international medalists. Tickets and additional show info will be posted here in Feb and March.

July 2-9: This summer, the chorus will be honored and thrilled to compete, in Indianapolis, against the world's finest and most competitive barbershop choruses. Approximately 10,000 Harmony devotees will attend the Indianapolis convention. A four -day weekend of singing, seminars, workshops, rehearsals, competitions, shows, fraternizing, making new friends and partying will conclude with the awarding of the year's and the world's finest Barbershop Harmony Society quartets and choruses. The Big Apple Chorus and its members will be attending and are planning to be a part of it all.

Come hear us, come visit us, come sing with us.

SPOTLIGHT ON
The Men in BAC
In this monthly feature, we spotlight the talents and backgrounds of the men in the Chapter and the Chorus to show what they uniquely contribute to the distinctive and vibrant esprit de corps of the Big Apple Chorus.

This month's featured BACman is not known as one of the quiet voices behind the scene. He is, after all a New Yorker; the rumble of his authoritative natural Master of Ceremonies bass voice, like a subway train, can be heard from the wings of a theater and out to the back of its house. But there's much more than his profound resonant sound that holds you when you're listening to Frank Hendricks.
