Manhattan Represented in Indy,
International Quartet Competition

The BHS: Manhattan Chapter is particularly proud that Big Apple Chorus based quartet, Reveille competed at the annual Mid Atlantic International Preliminary qualifying contest held in Cherry Hill NJ. this March; as a result, they qualified (with a score of 78.4) to compete at the Barbershop Harmony Society's annual International convention and quartet competition. Reveille's members, (Continued from Homepage) John Ward (lead), Mark Paul (bass), Joe Hunter (baritone/ chorus director) and Roger Payne (tenor / arranger), are all on the Big Apple Chorus music leadership team. They placed third, at the "Prelims" following only three other quartets that also qualified for the International: Wheelhouse (81.9), Premiere (81.1) and Four Aces with BAC alumni Nick Aiuto (79.1).

Also competing and representing the Manhattan chapter at the "Prelims", in the 5th place position, was Larry Bomback (tenor) in the quartet 'Round Midnight. Manhattan's, Greenwich Av. competed, debuting their new lead singer, Cecil Brown. The chapter was represented in the senior's Quartet category by the four members of Sugar Daddies (Jim Steiner, Bob Kovach, Gordon Harrison, Steve Dunie). Duel member of Manhattan and Brooklyn Kings Chorus Director, Neil Dingle, competed in his new quartet, Family Affair; and BAC alumni competitors included, Rich Garodnick (Jigsaw)and Nick Aiuto (Four Aces)).

The Manhattan Chapter is pleased that the Mid-Atlantic District will be very well represented at this year's International Convention and Competition in Indianapolis, in July. We will be there to cheer on all the District's representatives.

For the Fun of it!

More than ever, BACmen can be found informally quartetting in the hallways, back rooms, and stairwells of
Norman Thomas High School
after rehearsal as they discover the fun of ringing chords.

What is competition all about?
Every year, and perhaps as many as 3 times a year, a chorus goes into competition to find out how it measures against its peers. Why? Read this article from the Barbershop Harmony Society to learn about these conventions!
