We're BAC on the Tree!

Once again the Big Apple Chorus is proud and delighted to have been engaged by the management of New York's historic South Street Seaport to grace the landmark Fulton Market Square with holiday music. The BAC will be the featured performers on the giant living Christmas tree (the first of the trees to be formally lighted in the city) for the holidays. The shows will be hosted by no less than jolly St. Nick himself. Santa will, once again, be ready with plenty of candy canes for children young and old!

Starting Nov. 26th and each Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Christmas Eve, the BAC will perform two shows daily (Fri. at 6 and 7PM, Sat. and Sun. at 3 and 4PM) at the outdoor square at Fulton and Water St. (Inside the pier 17 mall on rain days). Dress warmly and take in the seasonal glow of the heart of old New York.

The Big Apple Chorus is now reviewing past and adding new holiday repertoire. Former BACmen and prospective new members are invited to come to our regular Monday rehearsals if they would like to be considered for this special opportunity to partake in the festivities and share in the holiday with fellow New Yorkers and visitors from around the world.

District: BAC AT BAT!
by: Kevin Kehres

White Sox, Red Sox, Indians, Yankees, Padres, Cardinals - feh! Baseball took a back seat to barbershopping in Wildwood, NJ, the first weekend in October.

Hundreds of vocal athletes competed for the right to move onto the next round of competition at the Mid-Atlantic District Chorus Competition. Because of the new rules regarding wild cards, the possibility existed that as many as four choruses from the Mid-Atlantic District could qualify for the 2006 International competition to be held in Indianapolis. Competition: Coming in Last:
It Isn't All It's Cracked Up to Be!
by: Neal Siegal

Yes, indeed, everybody was a winner at the Mid-Atlantic District Quartet competition! Everybody, except us, that is. Yes, Indeed (our quartet) came in last, dead last! It's a tough job being last, but somebody's got do it; and who is better suited than we four amiable, deferential and pathologically positive guys anyway?

The truth is: Losing isn't all it's cracked up to be. None of us died. In fact, it wasn't lost on us that we had already competed adequately at the Division contest to get to the District level competition; for which we are happy campers. It's not just a matter of making lemonade out of lemons to appreciate that we were stopped by many friends and fans (yes, we have fans- right Ma?) who said they loved what we did and would look forward to our next performance. A New Choreographer Joins the Big Apple Chorus Staff
by: Glynn Fluitt

The Big Apple Chorus is excited and pleased to welcome Christine Oberk into the family. Christine is a life-long dancer, dance instructor, choreographer and . . . .get this . . . .ROCKETTE!

Christine has already enhanced the Big Apple Chorus performance level by making little tweaks and suggestions to the chorus's contest performances. The audience in Salt Lake City, during the 2005 International convention, was witness to her new choreography suggestions during a performance that has continued to be the talk of the Society.

Our friends in Westchester, the Chordsmen, have employed many of Christine's choreography concepts and have been very successful in their growth as a performance group. We are thankful to the Chordsmen for allowing us to experience and share in that success by asking Christine to bring a little of that magic to the New York City audiences of the Big Apple Chorus.

Welcome Christine.

SPOTLIGHT ON
The Men in BAC
What do you do when your rehearsal turns into a three-ring circus? You count on one of your star acrobats to jump off the risers and skillfully pull a rubber chicken out of the director’s pants!

This month’s featured BACman wasn’t a class clown, but he was a circus arts teacher. How handy is that when you are staging a musical production of the song “Make ‘em Laugh?” We stopped by the confetti cannon to question Brad Verebay…it was no laughing matter.

MY INTRODUCTION TO BARBERSHOP MUSIC
by Mark A. Lubart

It was April, 1966 and The Manhattan Chapter of SPEBSQSA at that time was sponsoring a Barbershop Quartet show at Carnegie Hall. Having never actually heard a live quartet, I wanted to go, but $3.50 was a lot of money to spend on an unknown quantity. What if they were terrible? Full Story...

Music Teachers -- Here's Your Lesson Plan!!!
Are you a music teacher that's looking to put a little change, energy and excitement into your program? If you are, then you have absolutely found the right web site!

The Big Apple Chorus, in conjunction with the Barbershop Harmony Society, has a YOUNG MEN IN HARMONY program that will amaze you and energize your students. Don't let the name fool you. This is a program that can get ALL of your students studying music and singing a cappella harmony. There is a Young Women in Harmony program as well, as supported by the Sweet Adelines International organization. Either program will kick start a new curriculum or add to your current agenda with a fun, easy to learn, and very performable program.

Contact Mark Paul, info@bigapplechorus.com or call (212) 244-2775 for more information on how you can invite YMIH or YWIM into your school system and music program.
